On the other hand, in spite of certain differences regarding the healthcare systems, the demographic data of the trauma patients and medical procedures are comparable. However, due to system-level differences between German and Finnish healthcare, the results cannot be directly transformed into development proposals for the organizations. The results of the present study showed significant differences in the use of resources and throughput times in trauma patient processes between Finnish and German hospitals. In terms of ED mortality, no statistically significant differences were found. The productivity of the operating unit was quite similar in the hospitals. Differences were also found in the pre-operative length of stay of patients with proximal femoral fractures (UKB: 0.97 days, HUS: 1.57 days). However, the share of patients discharged was significantly higher in UKB (96.5% vs. Post-operative care was, on average, 41% shorter in HUS. Despite problems in defining comparable patients and resources, ED productivity was significantly higher in UKB. The biggest differences between the hospitals were found in the use of resources in the ED and in post-operative care. The share of patients discharged was used as a control measure. Problems related to the comparison of different healthcare systems were also identified. The present study is aimed at revealing differences in the throughput and productivity of trauma patient processes between German (UKB) and Finnish (HUS) tertiary trauma centers. The historical evolution of healthcare systems and organizations has led to variations in trauma patient processes in different countries. The actual establishment and the designation of trauma centers is the function of local, regional, or state health care systems agencies, such as the local emergency medical services (EMS) authority.Care process in tertiary trauma centers consists of a chain of care phases in different departments from the emergency department (ED) to post-operative rehabilitation. Rather, the program provides confirmation that a trauma center has demonstrated its commitment to providing the highest quality trauma care for all injured patients. The ACS Committee on Trauma’s verification program does not designate trauma centers. There are five separate categories of verification in the COT's program: Level I Trauma Center, Level II Trauma Center, Level III Trauma Center, Level I Pediatric Trauma Center and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center, each with specific criteria that must be met by a facility seeking that level of verification. It’s also perfecting the relationships with higher level trauma centers for instances when transfers need to take place.” It involves processes and training of not only our staff, but all first responders – anyone who would be involved in the care of a trauma patient. It involves our whole organization plus the community. Joanne Leibe, Trauma Medical Director, stated, “Verification is confirmed after a very close two-day examination by the ACS, but the work behind the scenes never ends. The reverification, which had been delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, will last three years, through May 16, 2025.ĭr. Memorial Hospital was first verified as a Level III trauma center in 2018. Verified trauma centers must meet the essential criteria that ensure trauma care capability and institutional performance, as outlined by the American College of Surgeons' Committee on Trauma in its current Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient manual. It means that if someone is involved in a trauma situation, they can be brought here instead of having to be transported elsewhere for care farther away.” Our re-verification as a Level III trauma center is very important to the local communities we serve and important to us. Kyle Bennett, President and CEO of Memorial Hospital, stated, “Caregivers at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center have shown their commitment to patients in the communities we serve by providing the highest level of care in the region. This achievement recognizes Memorial Hospital’s dedication to providing optimal care for injured patients.Į. Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center has been reverified as a Level III Trauma Center by the Verification Review Committee (VRC), an ad hoc committee of the Committee on Trauma (COT) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
